Bedrooms In Basements Policy
Section 810.0 and 804.4, Emergency escape, of the City of Grand Rapids Fire Code, PROHIBITS SLEEPING IN THE BASEMENT due to the fact there is no emergency escape. (Except for a few units with walk-out basement.)
1. Using any portion of your basement as a bedroom is a violation of CODES. Because beds and bedroom furniture are considered by the courts to be “prima facia” evidence of use as a bedroom, any beds or other furniture that can be used for a bedroom can only be stored knocked down or dismantled. Mattresses should be stored on their sides or ends, not lying flat.
2. Sleeping in the basement is seriously endangering the lives of anyone using the basement for such purposes.
3. If a violation to this policy is found to be, we will pursue whatever actions are possible to enforce this Housing and Fire Code.
